Rugby NEWS

On Wednesday 24th May we made the trip to Birmingham Exiles RFC for their annual rugby tournament. The team have been honing their skills every Wednesday lunchtime, with an additional training session the day before to prepare for the tournament. Here's what happened:

Oval 5 - 10 Hillstone
Try Scorer: Bradley
A very unlucky result. In training we had been working on loops, switches and long passes. This was the first test of playing our ambitious style of running rugby. Unfortunately not everything came off. We had most of the possession and our rugby was attractive to watch but were hit by two counter attacks
Oval 25 - 10 Percy Schurmer
Try Scorers: Izzie (3), Bradley, Harry
Things were coming together. Izzie used the loop effectively to get round the outside of a narrow defence. Harry and Bradley expertly came back in on switch balls, sending the defence the wrong way
Oval 15 - 15  Elms Farm
Try Scorers: Izzie, Bradley, Harry
We were now playing like the All Blacks. All of our moves were coming off. The spectators, referee and even the opposition coach said that they liked that we weren't just giving the ball to someone to run with, we were playing a skilful brand of rugby with set moves and dummy runners. We weren't to know this at the time, but Elms Farm went on to win the whole tournament out of 20 teams. We gave them a hell of a game
Oval 20 - 5 Severne
Try Scorers: Harry (3), Bradley
Hat-Trick Harry was untouchable. Time seemed to slow down when he had the ball. If Warren Gatland were watching the match, Harry would now be packing his suitcase to join the British Lions in New Zealand
Oval 15 - 10 Guardian Angels
Try Scorers: Madison, Harry, Bradley
Ian took the scrum-half role and disturbed the ball well. Erin and Hamza made some good runs but this match will always be remembered for Madison's first try. As she scored that important try, the noise level in the ground even drowned out the aeroplanes flying low overhead. I turned around and it was just Miss Chanjus cheering
Oval 15 - 10 Oasis Academy
Try Scorers: Tegan, Bradley, Izzie

We played our ambitious rugby to the very last game and rewarded with another win. 4 wins, 1 draw, 1 loss. Macie and Ibrahim ran with the ball impressively and 'Tegan the Terrier's' defensive work was outstanding, as it had been all tournament. She was a real nuisance to every team we played against, getting amongst the opposition before they could start their attacks and she was rewarded with a well-deserved first try

We were awarded key rings and certificates for winning our last 3 games and Izzie won 'Girl of the Tournament', for the second year in a row. The Exiles coaches were even trying to convince her up take up rugby. A special mention also goes to Bradley for scoring in every game. The team's attitude was perfect all day. They came back from losing the first game and whenever we conceded a try, we picked the ball up and went again, sticking to our ambitious style of play.
